Welcoming Refugee Youth | Upbeat Volunteer Stories

Refugee children and young people face many challenges, having fled their home countries and in many cases, made their own way to the UK without their family. Once they’ve arrived, they have to navigate a new culture, new language, and begin processing their traumatic journey — all while hundreds of miles away from all that’s familiar to them.

Deepa shared her experiences of volunteering at Upbeat Youth — our weekly youth group for young people seeking refuge that gives them opportunities to make friends, have fun, and experience a breath of fresh air from the struggles they face.

“Volunteering with Upbeat Youth Group on Tuesdays has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me. Upbeat Youth is a community organization that provides a safe and supportive environment for adults & young people, offering them various activities and opportunities to learn, grow, and have fun. The group exists to give youth, many of whom face social or financial challenges, a positive space where they can develop new skills, build friendships, and express themselves creatively.

During my time with Upbeat Youth, I've had the chance to participate in a wide range of activities. We've done creative arts projects, such as painting and crafting, which allow the young people to explore their artistic side. We've also engaged in different indoor and outdoor games that encourage teamwork and physical activity. One of the highlights was a football game and bowling trip, where we had a great time bonding outside of the usual setting. We’ve also hosted movie nights, offering a fun and relaxed way to unwind together. These fun, hands-on learning experiences have not only been enjoyable but also helped to build confidence and new skills among the participants.

Upbeat Youth attracts young people from diverse backgrounds, many of whom face difficulties like limited resources, social isolation, or the need for a positive role model. This can be challenging as it requires patience, understanding, and flexibility to meet each individual’s needs.

“My favourite part about volunteering at Upbeat Youth is seeing the genuine joy and growth in the young people.”

A trip to Derby Theatre to see Alice in Wonderland!

My favourite part about volunteering at Upbeat Youth is seeing the genuine joy and growth in the young people. The sense of community that builds through shared activities is powerful. One of the highlights has been the sense of accomplishment and connection that comes from watching these young people become more confident and engaged each week. Volunteering with them has truly been a fulfilling experience.”
