POST: Chief Executive Officer
LOCATION: Derby
SALARY: Circa £60,000
About You
Upbeat Communities is looking for a visionary, entrepreneurial, and values-driven CEO to lead the organisation into its next phase of impact and sustainability. Our current CEO, Andrew Jackson, is stepping down from his role after more than seven years in post; Upbeat Communities has benefitted greatly from the significant contributions Andrew has made during this time. As a nationally respected charity supporting refugees and asylum seekers with a strong social enterprise foundation, Upbeat Communities is at an exciting point of growth and innovation. This is an opportunity for an ambitious leader to shape the organisation's future, ensuring it continues to empower displaced people while developing sustainable income streams and expanding its influence.
Upbeat Communities welcomes and empowers refugees and asylum seekers as they rebuild their lives. Based in Derby, the charity has developed a unique, forward-thinking model that blends charity work with social enterprise—already generating 50% of its income from trading, with plans for further growth. Its Christian ethos underpins its work while ensuring inclusivity and a commitment to fostering an empowering and innovative culture.
The ideal candidate will be a strategic and entrepreneurial leader who can drive long-term sustainability and growth, balancing Upbeat’s grassroots ethos with national influence. With social enterprise set to become a more significant part of the organisation’s financial model, the CEO must be able to expand trading income while keeping Upbeat’s mission at the heart of every decision. This role requires a leader who can inspire and empower a high-performing team, fostering a culture of trust, innovation, and collaboration. The CEO will also influence policy and advocacy, securing partnerships with local authorities, funders, businesses, and national refugee organisations. Ensuring the voices of those with lived experience shape the organisation’s work is a fundamental priority.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a pioneering charity that blends social enterprise with impactful refugee and asylum seeker support. It is a chance to make a real difference by advocating for the rights of displaced people, amplifying their voices, and ensuring Upbeat’s long-term sustainability. The right leader will thrive in a fast-changing environment, embrace innovation, and lead with integrity and vision.
